An Environmentally Optimized Project
Since acquiring the Kami Project in 2021, Champion has conducted a thorough review of the proposed mitigation measures, monitoring requirements, and commitments from the 2012 Environmental Impact Statement, as well as the conditions outlined by both the CEA Agency’s Comprehensive Study Report and the Lieutenant-Governor in Council’s 2014 environmental assessment release.
As part of this process, we have further optimized the Project to minimize environmental impacts. This includes improvements in processing, mining methods, and environmental management, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability.
In July 2025, we submitted an updated Environmental Impact Statement to meet regulatory requirements and ensure that Kami aligns with today’s highest environmental standards. Before a final investment decision and construction can be considered, the Project will undergo a rigorous environmental assessment by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
You can find more details on our approach in Champion’s latest Sustainability Report.
Investing Locally to Build a Collective Legacy
Mining high-purity iron ore in Newfoundland and Labrador presents a major opportunity for economic growth. For instance, the Kami Project has the potential to create over 600 quality jobs for Labradorians and Indigenous communities while supporting local businesses.
We are committed to fostering support from host communities for the Project and ensuring they fully benefit from it. That is why we actively engage with residents of Labrador City and Wabush, as well as other stakeholders, to address concerns and incorporate mitigation measures.
To advance the Kami Project towards a potential interim investment decision and ultimately a potential final investment decision, work programs are expected to advance permitting and the completion of a Definitive Feasibility Study, which is expected to be completed in late calendar year 2026.
